Our History...
The Contractors' Safety Council of Brazosport, Inc. predates the Associated Builders and Contractors of the Texas Gulf Coast.
Although documentation is incomplete, some of the "Old Timers" have explained that in the late 1950's, Dr. A.P. Beutel, with Dow Chemical, strongly urged the local contractors working in the Dow facilities to start analyzing their accidents in order to determine the causes. Up to this point, some contractors had been dismissing their "accident prone" employees.
With a new emphasis on accident investigation, several contractors organized a "Safety Council" in August of 1963. The group held monthly meetings and shared suggestions for better safety performance.
In the 1970's, the passage of the "Williams-Steiger Act" by Congress brough the "Occupational Safety and Health Act" known as "OSHA" into existence. The Federal Government was now moving into the realm of safety regulation, incident investigation and record keeping. As a result of this new pressure the "Safety Council" and Dow Chemical began a formal contractor safety indoctrination and training program.
On November 1, 1974, the joint safety concerns of the "Safety Council" and the Associated Builders and Contractors resulted in the formation of what is now known as the Contractors' Safety Council of Brazosport, Inc. During 1975, the Contractors' Safety Council began conducting a slide and film presentation for all contractors entering the Dow plants. At first, this was done outside the contractors gates.
After several location changes and improvements to the program contents, the Generic Indoctrination Program assumed it's current form; professionally produced films with full time instructors in a modern classroom setting.
So, although the early days of the Contractors' Safety Council of Brazosport was a response to the unique requirements of the Dow Chemical Company, the Safety Council has evolved into a safety resource for the entire community.
The Mission of this Association is to improve the safety performance of the Members and our Community at large through promotional activities, sharing of information and pooling of resources.
The Members of the Council are proud of this organization and believe it has been very successful at creating a safe work environment in our community through safety training and plant safety indoctrination training.
The Contractors' Safety Council of Brazosport, Inc. is a voluntary association of Industry, Contractor companies and Professional Associates from across Brazoria County.
